Tell Costco- Use your power for good
There are a lot of reasons people are members of Costco. Affordability is at the top of the list, but many also shop at Costco because of their commitment to fair wages and to providing inexpensive organic produce.
But when it comes to toxic chemicals, they’re letting their members down. Unlike other big retailers like Walmart, Sam’s Club and Target, Costco does NOT have a comprehensive policy to restrict harmful chemicals in their products – such as toxic flame retardants that can harm children’s health.
We’re talking about chemicals like cancer-causing, hormone-disrupting flame retardants, some of which show up in toddlers at five times the rate of their mothers. It’s been demonstrated these chemicals are not needed for fire safety and pose a health risk to children and firefighters – who have a higher cancer risk because of the toxic cocktail to which they’re regularly exposed.
And while Costco has made some improvements in selling some flame retardant-free furniture, they lag behind other retailers and manufacturers like Ashley Furniture, Macy’s and Pier One Imports in committing to phase them out of furniture completely.
